Pinterest formats

What you can publish to Pinterest

Each format is checked against Pinterest’s own rules while you write, so problems show up in the composer instead of at publishing time.

  • Save

    Image Pin

    One image; 2:3 works best, like 1000 × 1500

  • Carousel

2 to 5 images, in the order you set

  • Video Pin

One video, 4 seconds to 15 minutes

How it works

From draft to live on Pinterest

  1. 1

    Connect Pinterest

Sign in with Pinterest and approve Postivate. Personal and business accounts both work, and each account becomes a channel in the workspace you choose.

  2. 2

    Make the Pin

Add one image, a carousel of 2 to 5 images or one video. The post text becomes the Pin’s description, up to 500 characters, and you can add a title of up to 100 and the link the Pin leads to.

  3. 3

    Get it approved

If the workspace needs approval, the post waits for the right person, who can approve it or send it back with a comment. An approval covers the exact version that was reviewed, so an edit afterwards goes back for review.

  4. 4

    Publish to the board

Pick one of the account’s boards, listed live from Pinterest, or create a new one right there. Postivate publishes the Pin to it at your time, and impressions, saves and clicks start coming in.

The right board for every Pin

Every Pin lives on a board, so the composer lists the account’s own boards straight from Pinterest. Pick one for the Pin, or type a name and create a new board without leaving Postivate. The board is saved with the post, so it’s set when the Pin goes out.

A title, a description and a link

The post text becomes the Pin’s description, with room for 500 characters. Add a title of up to 100 to lead the Pin, and a destination link so a tap takes people to your shop, recipe or article. Postivate checks each one against Pinterest’s limits while you write.

  • A description of up to 500 characters
  • An optional title of up to 100
  • A destination link, where the Pin leads

Images, carousels and video Pins

Pin one image, a carousel of 2 to 5 images that people swipe in the order you set, or one video between 4 seconds and 15 minutes. For a video Pin, the video’s poster frame is used as its cover.

  • One image, 2:3 works best
  • A carousel of 2 to 5 images
  • Video from 4 s to 15 min, with its poster frame as the cover

Pinterest analytics

See how every Pinterest post did.

Pinterest reports impressions, saves, Pin clicks, outbound clicks, reactions and comments for each Pin. Postivate works out engagements from saves, reactions and comments, and leaves clicks out, so the engagement rate compares with your other networks. Followers are recorded daily.

Good to know

Before you schedule for Pinterest

A few things about how Pinterest works with scheduling apps, from what we’ve learned building for it.

  • Go tall with 2:3

Pinterest favors 2:3 images, like 1000 × 1500 pixels. Crop to that shape before you upload; the free Pinterest image size guide does it in your browser.

  • Write the words people search for

People find Pins by searching. Put the words they’d type in the title and the first line of the description, and leave the hashtag pile out.

  • Give every Pin somewhere to go

A destination link turns a Pin into a way to your shop, recipe or article. Outbound clicks show how many people followed it.

  • Everything goes in the Pin

Pinterest has no threads, replies or first comments. The image, title, description and link are the whole Pin, so put what matters there.

Pinterest FAQ

Scheduling on Pinterest, answered.

Can I schedule Pins to Pinterest?

Yes. Connect your Pinterest account and schedule image Pins, carousels and video Pins for any time, each published to the board you pick.

Does it work with personal Pinterest accounts?

Yes. Postivate works with personal and business accounts. You connect with Pinterest’s own sign-in, and each connected account uses one channel slot.

How do I choose the board for a Pin?

In the composer, pick one of the account’s boards, listed live from Pinterest. Need a new one? Create it from the composer without leaving Postivate.

What can a Pin include?

An image, a carousel or a video, with the post text as the Pin’s description (up to 500 characters), an optional title of up to 100 characters and a destination link, where the Pin leads when someone taps it.

How many images or videos can a Pin have?

One image, a carousel of 2 to 5 images, or one video between 4 seconds and 15 minutes. Every Pin needs an image or a video, and a video can’t be mixed with images.

Which image size works best on Pinterest?

2:3, like 1000 × 1500 pixels. Pinterest favors tall images, so crop yours to that shape before you upload.

What cover does a video Pin get?

The video’s poster frame. Postivate sends it to Pinterest as the Pin’s cover when it publishes.

Can I add comments or threads to a Pin?

No. Pinterest has no threads, replies or first comments, so each Pin goes out on its own.

Which Pinterest analytics do I get?

Impressions, saves, Pin clicks, outbound clicks, reactions, comments, engagements and engagement rate for every Pin, plus daily followers. History goes back 30 days on Starter, 12 months on Pro and 24 months on Business.
