Mastodon Live

Schedule Mastodon posts and threads, on any server.

Write a post or a thread, attach images or a video, set who sees it and add a content warning if it needs one. Postivate connects to your own server, whether that’s mastodon.social, fosstodon.org or hachyderm.io, and publishes the thread in order at your time.

Mastodon formats

What you can publish to Mastodon

Each format is checked against Mastodon’s own rules while you write, so problems show up in the composer instead of at publishing time.

  • Post

Up to 4 images, or one video

  • Thread

Up to 25 posts, each with its own media

  • Video

One video, processed by your server before it posts

How it works

From draft to live on Mastodon

  1. 1

    Connect your server

Choose Mastodon in Postivate and type your handle, like [email protected], or leave it empty for mastodon.social. Your server opens its own page, you approve Postivate there, and the account is connected. There’s no app or token to create.

  2. 2

Write a post or a thread

Each post has 500 characters, counted the way Mastodon counts them: every link is 23, and a mention like @name@server counts only the @name part. Add replies under the first post to turn it into a thread.

  3. 3

    Get it approved

If the workspace needs approval, the post waits for the right person, who can approve it or send it back with a comment. An approval covers the exact version that was reviewed, so an edit afterwards goes back for review.

  4. 4

    Publish in order

Postivate uploads your media, waits while your server processes it and posts at your time, with the visibility and content warning you chose. Each reply goes under the one before it, and a retry never posts twice.

Threads that stay together

Plan the whole thread in one place, with images on the posts that need them. Postivate publishes each reply under the previous one, with the same visibility and content warning as the first post, so no part of the thread is more public than the rest.

  • Up to 25 posts in a thread
  • Up to 4 images or one video per post
  • 500 characters each

Content warnings and visibility

Set each post to Public, Quiet public or Followers only. Add a content warning to hide the post and its media behind a short text until someone opens it, or mark just the media as sensitive. The settings are saved with the post, so they’re in place when it goes out.

  • Public, Quiet public or Followers only
  • A content warning in your own words
  • Media marked as sensitive

Any server, every account

Mastodon has no single home, and Postivate doesn’t assume one. Connect accounts on mastodon.social, fosstodon.org, hachyderm.io or any other server, each as its own channel in the workspace it belongs to. Postivate registers itself on each server for you.

  • Accounts on any Mastodon server
  • No app or token to create
  • Disconnecting also revokes access on the server

Mastodon analytics

See how every Mastodon post did.

Mastodon reports favorites, boosts and replies for each post, and Postivate adds them up as engagements. Mastodon doesn’t share views, so there’s no reach number to compare. Followers are recorded daily.

Good to know

Before you schedule for Mastodon

A few things about how Mastodon works with scheduling apps, from what we’ve learned building for it.

  • Hashtags do the finding

Mastodon has no algorithm picking posts for people. They follow hashtags and search by them, so a few specific ones in CamelCase, like #SlowFashion, help the right people find your post.

  • Follow your server’s customs

Many servers expect a content warning for topics like politics, food or spoilers. Check your server’s rules, and add the warning in the post’s Mastodon settings so it’s there when the post goes out.

  • Paste the whole link

However long a link is, Mastodon counts it as 23 characters. There’s no need for a link shortener, and the counter in Postivate already counts links the Mastodon way.

  • Quiet public for small updates

Quiet public posts reach your followers and anyone who visits your profile, but stay out of public timelines and trends. Use it for reminders and follow-ups that don’t need to travel.

Beyond Mastodon

One workflow for every network.

Mastodon is one channel in Postivate. Write once, give each network its own version, and keep approvals, the calendar and the results in one place.

Mastodon FAQ

Scheduling on Mastodon, answered.

Can I schedule posts to Mastodon?

Yes. Connect your Mastodon account and schedule text posts, images and videos for any time.

Does it work with my Mastodon server?

Yes. Postivate works with accounts on any Mastodon server, such as mastodon.social, fosstodon.org or hachyderm.io. Type your handle when you connect, like [email protected], and approve Postivate on your server’s page. Each connected account uses one channel slot.

Do I need to create an app or an access token?

No. Postivate registers itself on your server automatically, and you approve it on your server’s own page. Disconnecting the channel in Postivate also revokes its access on the server.

Can I schedule a Mastodon thread?

Yes. Add up to 24 replies under the first post. They’re published in order, each replying to the previous one, with the same visibility and content warning.

How are characters counted on Mastodon?

The way Mastodon counts them. A post has 500 characters, every link counts as 23 however long it is, and a mention like @name@server counts only the @name part.

How many images or videos can a Mastodon post have?

Up to 4 images, or one video. Postivate uploads the media and waits while your server processes it before the post goes out.

Can I add a content warning or change who sees a post?

Yes, per post. Choose Public, Quiet public or Followers only, add a content warning that hides the post and its media until someone opens it, or mark only the media as sensitive.

Which Mastodon analytics do I get?

Favorites, boosts, replies and engagements for every post, plus daily followers. Mastodon doesn’t report views. History goes back 30 days on Starter, 12 months on Pro and 24 months on Business.
