Tumblr Live

Schedule Tumblr posts to every blog you run.

Write the post, add images or a video, tag it the way your community searches, and pick the blog. Postivate publishes it at your time, adds it to the blog’s queue or keeps it private, and brings back the likes, reblogs and replies.

Tumblr formats

What you can publish to Tumblr

Each format is checked against Tumblr’s own rules while you write, so problems show up in the composer instead of at publishing time.

  • Post

Text with images, a paragraph for every line

  • Photo post

Up to 10 images, stacked in the order you set

  • Video

One video, up to 10 minutes

How it works

From draft to live on Tumblr

  1. 1

    Connect your blogs

Sign in with Tumblr and approve Postivate once. Every blog on your account is listed, and you pick the ones to connect, each as its own channel in the workspace it belongs to.

  2. 2

    Write and tag the post

Write the post, add up to 10 images or one video, and add up to 30 tags. Choose whether it publishes, joins the blog’s queue, stays private or waits as a draft.

  3. 3

    Get it approved

If the workspace needs approval, the post waits for the right person, who can approve it or send it back with a comment. An approval covers the exact version that was reviewed, so an edit afterwards goes back for review.

  4. 4

    Publish on time

Postivate uploads your media with the post and publishes it to the blog at your time, with its tags and settings. Likes, reblogs and replies start coming in from the post’s notes.

Every blog on your account

One Tumblr sign-in covers all of your blogs, so connect your main blog and your side blogs together and put each one in the workspace it belongs to. When Tumblr renews the sign-in, every connected blog stays connected.

  • Main and side blogs from one sign-in
  • Each blog in its own workspace
  • Disconnect one blog, keep the others

Tags, the queue and private posts

Add up to 30 tags in the post’s Tumblr settings, separated by commas, with or without the #. Publish the post at your time, add it to the blog’s queue so it goes out on the queue’s own schedule, keep it private, or save it as a draft on Tumblr. You can also credit a content source and turn reblogs off.

  • Up to 30 tags, each up to 140 characters
  • Published, queued, private or draft
  • A content source, and reblogs on or off

Images and video

Add up to 10 images to a post, stacked in the order you set, or one video of up to 10 minutes. The media goes above your text, each line of which becomes its own paragraph, the way Tumblr lays a post out.

  • Up to 10 images per post
  • One video, up to 10 minutes
  • JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP

Tumblr analytics

See how every Tumblr post did.

Tumblr counts every like, reblog and reply on a post as a note. Postivate reads the notes and shows likes, reblogs and replies separately, and adds them up as engagements. Tumblr doesn’t share views, so there’s no reach number to compare. Followers are recorded daily for every blog.

Good to know

Before you schedule for Tumblr

A few things about how Tumblr works with scheduling apps, from what we’ve learned building for it.

  • Tags are how people find you

Tumblr users follow tags and search by them. Use the specific tags your community already follows, not just the broad ones everybody uses.

  • Let the queue keep the pace

Have a steady rhythm set on your blog’s queue? Add posts to the queue from Postivate and let Tumblr space them out, and schedule the timely ones yourself.

  • Lead with the picture

Images go above the text on Tumblr. Pick the one that tells the story on its own, since that’s what people see first on the dashboard.

  • Reblogs travel furthest

A reblog puts your post on someone else’s blog, with your name on it. Keep reblogs on for the posts you want to spread, and off for personal ones.

Tumblr FAQ

Scheduling on Tumblr, answered.

Can I schedule posts to Tumblr?

Yes. Connect your Tumblr blogs and schedule text posts, images and videos for any time, with tags.

Can I post to more than one Tumblr blog?

Yes. When you sign in with Tumblr, every blog on your account is listed, and you pick the ones to connect. Each connected blog is its own channel and uses one channel slot.

Can I add tags to a Tumblr post?

Yes, up to 30 per post, each up to 140 characters. Separate them with commas in the post’s Tumblr settings, with or without the #.

Can I add posts to my Tumblr queue?

Yes. Choose Added to the queue in the post’s Tumblr settings, and Tumblr publishes it on your blog’s queue schedule. You can also publish it straight away at your time, keep it private or save it as a draft.

How many images or videos can a Tumblr post have?

Up to 10 images, or one video of up to 10 minutes. Images can be JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP.

Is there a character limit on Tumblr?

No. Tumblr sets no limit on a post’s text, so write as much as the post needs. Each line becomes its own paragraph.

Can I add comments or threads to a Tumblr post?

No. Each Tumblr post goes out on its own. People reply to it and reblog it on Tumblr.

Which Tumblr analytics do I get?

Likes, reblogs, replies and engagements for every post, from its notes, plus daily followers for every blog. Tumblr doesn’t report views. History goes back 30 days on Starter, 12 months on Pro and 24 months on Business.
