How it works

How to use the Bluesky Handle Checker

  1. 1

    Type the handle

Just the first part, without .bsky.social. The rules light up as you type.

  2. 2

    Check availability

Bluesky tells us whether the handle can be registered, including reserved names. The other networks are checked at the same time.

  3. 3

    Pick an alternative

Taken? We suggest close variations and show the ones Bluesky says are free.

Bluesky handle rules

What Bluesky allows in a handle

These are the rules the checker tests as you type.

  • 1

    3 to 18 characters

That’s the part before .bsky.social: letters, numbers and hyphens.

  • 2

No hyphen at the start or end

    “ember-coffee” works; “-embercoffee” doesn’t.

  • 3

    Some names are reserved

Bluesky keeps some words for itself. The checker asks Bluesky directly, so a reserved handle shows as taken.

  • 4

    Your handle is a domain

Every handle is a web address. That’s why you can also use your own website as your handle.

Choosing a handle

How to pick a Bluesky handle that works

  • Use your own domain

A handle like @emberroastery.com shows people the account is really yours. You can switch to it any time in settings.

  • Match your other networks

People come over from X and Threads looking for the name they know. Keep it the same where you can.

  • Hyphens over numbers

If your name is taken, a hyphenated version reads better than one with numbers.

  • Change without losing anything

Your followers and posts belong to your account, not your handle, so changing it later doesn’t cost you anything.

Bluesky Handle Checker FAQ

Questions, answered.

How do I know if a Bluesky handle is available?

Type it into the checker. We ask Bluesky whether name.bsky.social can be registered, so “Available” comes from Bluesky itself, reserved names included.

What characters can a Bluesky handle have?

3 to 18 letters, numbers and hyphens before .bsky.social, with no hyphen at the start or end.

Can I use my own domain as my Bluesky handle?

Yes. In settings, choose to change your handle and pick your own domain. Bluesky asks you to add a record to the domain to prove it’s yours.

Do I lose followers if I change my Bluesky handle?

No. Followers and posts stay with your account. People who type your old handle won’t find you, so update your links.

Is the Bluesky handle checker free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up, and we don’t store the handles you check.
