How it works

How to use the Character Counter

  1. 1

    Type or paste your post

The count updates as you type, for every network at once.

  2. 2

    See where it fits

Each network shows its count against its limit, and where “more” cuts the text.

  3. 3

    Open one network

Each network’s own counter has its other fields too, like bios and titles, with a preview.

Counting rules

Why networks count differently

The counter follows these, so the number you see is the number the network sees.

  • 1

    X weighs characters

Emojis and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two, and every link counts as 23, however long it is.

  • 2

    Bluesky counts what you see

An emoji counts as one, even when it’s made of several characters.

  • 3

    Mastodon shortens links

Every link counts as 23, and a mention of someone on another server counts only their username.

  • 4

    “More” cuts sooner

Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and TikTok show only the start of a post. The first line has to work on its own.

Character Counter FAQ

Questions, answered.

Why does X count my post differently?

X counts emojis and many non-Latin characters as two, and any link as 23. The counter follows the same rules.

Is the character counter free?

Yes, and it works without signing up. It counts in your browser, so nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Do spaces and line breaks count?

Yes, on every network. Each space and line break is a character.

Do hashtags count toward the limit?

Yes. A hashtag is part of the text, so its characters count like any other.

Can I check bios and titles too?

Yes. Open a network’s own counter for its other fields, like bios, titles and comments.
