How networks handle images

Recommended uploads: networks scale images down, never up, so start at least this big.

  • 1

    They scale down, not up

Upload at the recommended size or larger. A small image gets blurry when the network stretches it.

  • 2

    Profile pictures are circles

Most networks crop profile pictures to a circle. Keep faces and logos in the middle.

  • 3

    Banners get cropped

Phones show less of a banner than desktops. Keep text in the middle.

  • 4

    Portrait wins in feeds

A 4:5 image takes more of the screen than a square or landscape one.

Image Size Guide FAQ

Questions, answered.

What are the most common social media image sizes?

1080 × 1080 for square posts, 1080 × 1350 for portrait posts, 1080 × 1920 for Stories and vertical video, and 1500 × 500 for headers on X, Bluesky and Mastodon.

Is the image resizer free?

Yes, and it works without signing up. Images are cropped in your browser and never uploaded.

Does the resizer upload my images?

No. Cropping happens in your browser and the image never leaves your device.

Should I download JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos: smaller files. PNG for logos, text and anything with sharp edges.

Why does my image look blurry after uploading?

It was smaller than the size the network shows it at, so it got stretched. Start from a larger image.
