What Telegram allows in a username

These are the rules the checker tests as you type.

    5 to 32 characters

    Letters, numbers and underscores. Usernames aren’t case-sensitive.

    One name, many kinds

    People, bots, groups and channels share the same usernames, so a channel can hold the name you want for your account.

    Some names are sold

    Telegram sells some usernames as collectibles on Fragment. They can look unused on Telegram and still not be free; the checker looks there too.

    Your public address

    Your username gives you a t.me link, so people can find you without your phone number.

Choosing a username

How to pick a Telegram username that works

  • Same as your channel

    If you run a channel, use the same name for it and your account, or a clear pair like “ember” and “ember_support”.

  • Match your other networks

    People share t.me links next to Instagram and X profiles. One name everywhere looks trustworthy.

  • Underscores, sparingly

    An underscore can separate words, but several in a row are hard to read in a link.

  • Bots end in “bot”

    If you’re naming a bot, Telegram requires the username to end in “bot”, like ember_bot.

Fragment is the marketplace where Telegram usernames, including some shorter than 5 characters, are sold as collectibles. A name sold there is taken even if no account shows it yet.

Do I need a username on Telegram?

No, it’s optional. Without one, people need your phone number to find you. With one, you can share a t.me link instead.
