Twitch username rules

What Twitch allows in a username

These are the rules the checker tests as you type.

  • 1

    4 to 25 characters

Letters, numbers and underscores. No spaces, periods or hyphens.

  • 2

    Your channel address

Your username is your channel at twitch.tv/username and the name in chat. Your display name can only change its capital letters.

  • 3

    Once every 60 days

You can change your username once every 60 days, so choose one you’ll stream under for a while.

  • 4

    Old names are held

When someone changes or deletes their name, Twitch holds it for months before anyone else can take it. A name without a channel can still be held.

Choosing a name

How to pick a Twitch name that works

  • Easy to say on stream

Viewers repeat it to friends. If you’d have to spell it out, simplify it.

  • Match your clips

Your highlights travel on TikTok, YouTube and X. The same name there sends viewers back to your channel.

  • Add a word, not numbers

If your name is taken, add a word that fits: tv, plays, live, gg. Long number strings are hard to remember.

  • Check Kick too

Many streamers keep the same name on Kick and YouTube, even if they stream mostly on Twitch.

Twitch Username Checker FAQ

Questions, answered.

How do I know if a Twitch username is available?

Type it into the checker. We look up the Twitch channel for that name: if there’s none, it’s most likely free. Twitch holds names from renamed, deleted and suspended accounts, so a name can look free and still be refused.

What characters can a Twitch username have?

4 to 25 letters, numbers and underscores.

How often can I change my Twitch username?

Once every 60 days. Your display name can change its capital letters at any time.

Why can’t I take a Twitch name nobody uses?

Twitch holds names after a rename or deletion before releasing them, and doesn’t release names of suspended accounts. Try a close variation instead.

Is the Twitch username checker free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up, and we don’t store the names you check.
