How it works

How to use the X Username Checker

  1. 1

    Type the handle

Without the @. X’s rules light up as you type, so you know it’s allowed before you check.

  2. 2

    Check availability

X tells us whether the handle can be registered, including names it blocks. The other networks are checked at the same time.

  3. 3

    Pick an alternative

Taken? We suggest close variations and show the ones X says are free.

X username rules

What X allows in a handle

These are the rules the checker tests as you type.

  • 1

    5 to 15 characters

New handles need more than 4 characters. Shorter handles you see belong to older accounts.

  • 2

    Letters, numbers, underscores

No periods, hyphens or spaces. Handles aren’t case-sensitive.

  • 3

    Some words are blocked

A handle can’t contain “Twitter” or “Admin”. The checker gets this from X, so a blocked handle shows as not allowed.

  • 4

    Change it any time

You can change your handle in settings whenever you like. Your followers and posts move with it, but links to the old handle stop working.

Choosing a handle

How to pick an X handle that works

  • Short wins

Your handle shows up in every reply and mention. A short one is easier to remember and to type.

  • Match your other networks

People move between X, Threads and Bluesky. The same handle everywhere makes you easy to find.

  • Underscores, sparingly

One underscore can separate two words; more than that is hard to say and to type.

  • Keep the brand in the name

Your display name can be longer and more descriptive. Use it for the words people search for.

X Username Checker FAQ

Questions, answered.

How do I know if an X handle is available?

Type it into the checker. We ask X the same question its sign-up asks, so “Available” comes from X itself. It also tells us when a handle is blocked or too short.

How many characters can an X handle have?

5 to 15 for a new handle: letters, numbers and underscores.

When does a deactivated X account’s handle become free?

A deactivated account can be restored for 30 days, and its handle is held during that time. After that the account is deleted.

Can I get a handle from an inactive account?

An account keeps its handle even if it never posts, and suspended accounts keep theirs too. Try a close variation instead.

Is the X username checker free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up, and we don’t store the handles you check.
