YouTube hashtag rules

What works on YouTube

The generator follows these, so what you copy works when you paste it.

  • 1

    The first three show

The first three hashtags in your description appear above the title as links. Put the best ones first.

  • 2

    15 at most

With more than 15 hashtags, YouTube ignores all of them. The generator never lets you pick more.

  • 3

    Description or title

Hashtags go at the end of the description, or in the title for Shorts. Keep the title readable.

  • 4

    Describe, don’t bait

Tags must relate to the video. Misleading ones break YouTube’s rules.

Ideas

Hashtags for every kind of video

  • Tutorials

The skill and the tool, in the words people search for.

  • Shorts

The topic and #shorts if you like.

  • Vlogs

The place, the theme and your channel tag.

  • Reviews

    The product and its category.

YouTube Hashtag Generator FAQ

Questions, answered.

How many hashtags should I use on YouTube?

Three to five usually. The first three show above your title, and more than 15 make YouTube ignore them all.

Is the YouTube hashtag generator free?

Yes. You can generate tags without signing up. We only use what you type to suggest them and don’t store it.

Where do I put hashtags on YouTube?

At the end of the video description. For Shorts, the title works too.

Are hashtags the same as YouTube tags?

No. Tags are keywords you add in YouTube Studio that viewers don’t see. Hashtags are clickable and show on the video.

Should I add #shorts?

It can help YouTube know it’s a Short, but it isn’t required: vertical videos under three minutes are treated as Shorts anyway.
